Really? So I don’t look like I have a lot of money so I am not worth your time?

This rant is a long time in coming! I cannot believe the poor customer service out there if you are not dressed to the “t”’s!!

Yesterday I went to a mall to get a phone transferred over to a new cellular service, I was not feeling good but had to get it done. I went in jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt with my hair pulled back, wearing my glasses and no makeup. So I didn’t look like a model or whatever someone’s idea of what I should look like. First off, who cares!

But here goes…I walk up to the mall kiosk, I am being polite and ask if they can switch some phone numbers over from an old phone to a new phone that was just added to my line. I was looked up and down and told that only if I would pay the $20 fee. NOW I know that is not true! I just had another phone here in Ohio transferred all the numbers to a new phone and it didn’t cost me a thing because I am a preferred customer, meaning thanks to a couple perks I get “better service”. Or whatever you want to call it….it doesn’t matter this guy told me a lie, because he didn’t want to deal with me, I wasn’t worth his time.

I waited for 25 minutes for this guy to help me, he went from one worker to another talking about what he was going to do that night, where he was taking his girlfriend out…all the while I am standing there waiting for him to take my phones and do the transfer. Finally another clerk comes up to me smiles and takes my phones to do the transfer.

I am all willing to pay the $20 knowing full well I don’t need to, what happens this new clerk checks out my account online and sees that I do have special perks with the company and then goes “Thank you Ms. White, I see you are a valued customer here with “company name withheld” so you don’t have to buy generic amoxil worry about a thing. Basically from that point on they were kissing my butt! The man who treated me bad in the beginning was apologizing hand over foot for his behavior towards me…all I can say is “poo on you” of course that is not what I said but I sure thought something else.  I am tired of this crap!

Take the little scenario I did a couple years ago when I was a mystery shopper:

The company I was hired to do the mystery shop asked me to go into a store dressed in my normal day to day sweats etc and then go back in two days dressed to the hilt.

I remember the first time going into the grocery store, hunting down a clerk to help me get an item off the top shelf. I was wearing sweats had on a baseball cap, no makeup and my glasses. I was clean mind you but wasn’t dressed up. It took me 43 minutes to get someone to help me, I kept getting passed on from one person to the next. Finally someone took “pity” on me and decided they would help me get the item down.

Now two days later I go back into the same store. I am in my best outfit, high heels, expensive purse, with makeup, my hair extensions are in and I do the same scenario and do you know what I had help within 1 minute!

I went up to the same clerk who passed me on to the other clerk two days before. He was more than happy to help me, give me a great deal on the item I wanted and give me the best customer service I had ever received in that store, not to mention him flirting with me the whole time which I honestly did not like at all! To put it in layman’s terms he was kissing my arse!!!

So tell me just because I go into a store and am wearing sweats I am not worth your time? So if you see a person walking down the street who looks like they are down on their luck you are going to walk away from them? They don’t “deserve” your time or attention?

Come on people, it doesn’t matter what a person looks like, we are all the same! I don’t deserve to be treated badly because I am in sweats, and I don’t deserve to be treated like a queen because I am wearing expensive clothes!

Your job is to treat all your customers the same! To treat each individual person the same!

Time to wake up people! We are all one, we all are from the same place and we all deserve respect….

That is my rant for the week!

Want to comment on this article, please do right below this article is a comments section I would love to hear your stories of customer service….I know I cannot be the only one who has gone through this before….

I see it quite often too, Bekah. It’s not right and unless we speak up to management, it continues.

Reminds me of an anecdote my instructors told me when I was in college for Light Horse Management.

There was a high class horse farm that catered to the very wealthy for the most part. Once day a couple of college kids in a beat-up VW drove in and asked to see the yearlings & 2-year olds. The farm manager figured they wouldn’t be able to afford anything, but he treated them like a prospective buyer. He showed them the colts & fillies and answered all their questions. At the end of the day, the one kid pulls out his checkbook, buys 2 of the most expensive colts on the farm and asks to use the phone to call for a trailer to come pick up the horses.

The sale never would have taken place if the manager had treated them like no-account browsers.
